Soya beans

What are soya beans?
Soya beans are vegetables or more precisely legumes in the botanical family of Papilionacea (bot. Leguminosae), originating from China. According to some experts, they were first cultivated as a crop around 2,700 BC. Other sources estimate that soya bean farming began from around 800 BC onwards. But regardless of the precise date, soya beans have since developed into the world’s most economically significant vegetable. The beans were first introduced in Europe and America towards the end of the 18th century. Today, they can be found throughout the globe. The primary areas of cultivation are China, India, Indonesia, Africa, the Philippines, South and Central America, and Russia. The diversity of ways in which they can be processed and used have made them the world’s most economically important plant.

How do soya beans grow?
Soya beans grow in bushy plants up to 1.8 metres high. Their pods are yellow, grey, brown, or black, 3 to 6 cm long, and usually grow in clusters of 3 to 5. Each pod contains up to 5 seeds. Depending on the variety of bean, the shape, size, and colour of the seeds vary, but the seeds are typically cream-coloured and spherical. Some varieties have flat, arched, egg-shaped, or kidney-shaped seeds. Olive-yellow, green, red, brown, and black seeds are less commonly found on the market. The size of the seeds also changes between varieties.

What can soya beans do?

  • Soya beans are rich in vegetable protein.

Protein helps to build and maintain muscle mass*. It is one of the essential building materials of our muscular system.

Many of the essential materials needed by the human organism are not found in plant-based proteins or only present in small amounts (with a few rare exceptions). Soya is one of the few plant-based foods that contain the amino acids needed by the body, which improves the quality of its vegetable proteins.
