Popcorn corn

Main Areas of Cultivation:
worldwide
Description: Popcorn is made from a special type of corn called popcorn maize. Popcorn maize is classified as a grain and botanically belongs to the grass family. While there are many types of corn, only one specific variety is suitable for making popcorn: so-called popping or flint corn. Other types are either too dry or too soft to pop. When heated, moisture inside the kernel turns to steam. This steam builds pressure inside the hull until it bursts. The softened starch then rapidly expands and solidifies as it cools in the air.
Uses:
Popcorn maize is, of course, primarily used to make popcorn. With just a few grams of kernels, you can quickly pop a whole pot full of fluffy popcorn. The best part? You can season and flavor it just the way you like. Occasionally, popcorn is also used in baking, as a topping for sweet treats, or even in molecular gastronomy.
