Flaxseed

Main areas of cultivation:
China, Russia, Ukraine, Egypt, Flanders
Description:
Flaxseed, also known as linseed, is the seed of the flax plant (scientifically Linum usitatissimum). Flax grows 50 to 150 cm tall, with sky-blue petals. From these develop round capsules up to 8 mm in size, which contain 8-10 flaxseeds each. When the flax is ripe, the seed capsules usually open to let the seeds fall to the ground and sprout anew. Flaxseeds are a source of alpha-linolenic acid, an important omega-3 fatty acid.
Uses:
Flaxseeds are a great ingredient for granola, muesli and baked goods.
