Pine trees are native to the Mediterranean region. Today, Pakistan and China are the biggest distributors of pine nuts. The small kernels are usually harvested in winter, when the pinecones are still closed. Most pine nuts are harvested from wild pine forests, since cultivation pines has not been successful yet. Pine nuts are a natural source for vitamin E.
